The Alice Cooper phenomenon began in the late 1960's when Alice Cooper, then going by his given name of Vincent Furnier, fronted a band called Alice Cooper. Their bizarre stage shows and horror-influenced lyrics brought them success and founded the Shock Rock sub-genre. The band's success started to slip after Muscle Of Love was released in 1973, so the band parted ways to follow individual projects. By now Vincent had taken to calling himself Alice Cooper and so continued on with the name while embarking on his solo career.
After the success of Welcome To My Nightmare in 1975 and Alice Cooper Goes To Hell in 1976, Alice's popularity began to fade due to changing musical trends as well as his alcoholism. In the late '80s, after dealing with his dependencies and landing a couple of roles in horror films, Alice's career once again began to take flight with his comeback album Constrictor. It was here that Alice embraced a more metallic sound, albeit the Hair Metal style of bands such as Motley Crue and Ratt. 1989's Trash was a commercial success (but the metallic elements were toned down drastically), featuring appearances by stars of the time such as Jon Bon Jovi and Aerosmith. Hey Stoopid continued in the same pop-rock direction, but once again musical trends changed with the coming of Grunge. A master of career resurrection, Alice once again reinvented his sound with The Last Temptation this time adopting a much heavier, grittier metal sound. Lyrically his songwriting became more substantial and thoughtful. Both his sound and lyrical themes have carried through to his most recent release.
